Happy Birthday to the greatest man I never knew I'd find.

For twenty nine years I have wished you happy birthday.

For half of those years, the first time we have had sex when you turn that age, I tell you; “Wow that’s the first time I’ve ever made love to a man of ___ age.” And for eighteen years you’ve laughed, every single time I say it.

What I haven’t done for twenty-nine years, is feel that we really, and truly are, finally, in a solid place in our marriage. I have to confess that I haven’t often thought that life might not throw us another self-inflicted terrible curve-ball, like it has in the past, the way I do now. Nor have I felt so deeply that the ways we used to foolishly take one another for granted, or not really hear one another when we shared what we needed changed, so that our needs could be meet in a way that felt more authentic, were behind us, the way I do now.

Back in the day, we took every little thing so personally, and then we would react, often, like petulant children. Sometimes those reactions were brutal, and cruel, with consequences that felt like we might not ever come back from them. And yet somehow we have.

And so here we are. Today you are forty eight. When I met you, you were a boy of eighteen, on the brink of turning nineteen. I can’t even wrap my head around how quickly these years have passed. I can barely recall all the incredible experiences we’ve shared, all I can say is that I’m thankful for every single one of them. Yes, my love even the shitty ones, because without them we wouldn’t be the people, the couple we are today, and I believe in my soul that we are solid.

Finally, I believe it, in my soul.

Of all the things I’m thankful for, your birth is at the very top.

I know that this year is going to be an amazing year for you. I know that the changes that you’ve recently made, that you were unsure of, with your acting management, agents, and publicity team are going to bring you the rewards your talent, your work and your thirty four years of incredible work warrant.

I cannot wait to watch you soar my baby.
